For makers

The family down the road is looking for what you make.

Home bakers, sweet and pickle makers, caterers, small food units and farmers. Tell the coach what you make and it writes your listing, so families nearby can find you.

Listing through the coach costs nothing, and nobody here will ask you for money.

Who this is for

Small is normal here.

Most makers on Aahar are run by a family, often from home, often by women. If you make food people buy, you belong.

  • home bakers
  • sweet and snack makers
  • pickle, papad and masala makers
  • home caterers and tiffin services
  • homemade chocolates and cakes
  • small dairy, fish and coconut processors
  • farmers who sell what they grow

Aahar speaks about makers by what they make. Not vendors, not SKUs, not an ecosystem — neer dosa, patrode, mango pickle, banana chips.

What you get

A listing, in your own words.

  1. Say what you make

The actual food, and what you are best known for.

  2. Say what is in it

The local produce you use and where it comes from.

  3. Say how to order

Pickup, delivery area, minimum order, and the seasons you make it.

  4. Choose who sees it

Publicly on Aahar, or only to the Moneypal team. You can change it later.

Paperwork

FSSAI, labels and hygiene.

Most small food businesses need at least a basic FSSAI registration; larger ones need a licence. The official portal is foscos.fssai.gov.in, and the coach will encourage you to register and can note that you want help with it.

A packaged food label usually shows the product name, ingredients, net weight, date of manufacture and best-before date, the maker’s name and address, and the FSSAI number. Check current rules on the FSSAI site rather than here: this site is not a food-safety authority and states no fees or turnover limits.

Clean water, covered storage, clean hands and surfaces, and clear dates on every batch.

Being straight with you

What Aahar does not do.

Aahar does not sell for you, take payment, set your prices or promise you orders. It makes you findable, and a person from Moneypal follows up on anything that needs a human.

The coach will not answer health questions about food, will not quote a price or a nutrient value, and will never say a word against anyone else’s food. Aahar is for local food, not against anything.

  • Whether listing will always be free.

Why Aahar exists

You are what your ancestors ate.

Our bodies are older than our menus. We are built to thrive on the food that has always been available around us.

Our bodies are older than our menus. For most of human history we ate what grew around us. Our intelligence has since changed the world outside us at astonishing speed: in barely two generations we went from the first powered flight to flying on another planet. Our insides have not kept up. The engine is the same; only the fuel keeps changing, and labs invent a new dish every morning.

You are what your ancestors ate. We are built to thrive on the food that has always been available around us. After a long trip around the world, through quinoa, blueberries, imported nuts and dates, we are coming full circle: back home, to soul food.

Local produce, from not too far. Ragi and other millets, moringa, jackfruit, desi ghee, coconut, the many local kinds of common vegetables, and the fish, rice, pickles, sweets and snacks that Udupi's kitchens have always made.

  • It is good for you

Local food is fresher, carries more of its nutrients, and follows the seasons.

  • It is good for the place

It keeps money and jobs in the district, keeps local varieties and farmland alive, and encourages farmers to grow more than one crop.

  • It is good for the planet

It needs less fuel to reach you, less packaging, and less is wasted on the way.

Our part

Closing the circle.

Two circles close the distance between farm and table.

  • The farmer circle

From the farm to the table.

  • The producer circle

The home cooks, bakers, sweet and pickle makers and small food units who turn local produce into food, and the suppliers who serve them.

Aahar makes these circles visible, so that a family can find the maker down the road and the maker can find the family. We call it local commerce: trade within a short distance, among people who can know each other.

Where we are

Udupi first.

Aahar starts in Udupi district: Udupi, Brahmavara, Kundapura, Karkala, Kaup, Byndoor, Hebri. Mangaluru and other districts follow. No date has been set for any district beyond Udupi.
